Hamilton Senior Center
BOOM, BANG, WHOOSH, SPARKLE, POP! Sounds and sights of July,

one special day which bring delight to kids of all ages, but causes many of

our fur friends to run for cover and hide in a dark, quiet closet. This 4th of

July is particularly special as we celebrate 250 years since the birth of our

incredible country. Other than fireworks, cookouts and parades, it is

another day of reflection and thanks for the privilege of being an American

and having the many freedoms we enjoy thanks to the wisdom, hard work

and sacrifices of our forefathers and prior generations.

NUTRITION PROGRAM QUESTIONS

A month has now passed since the Council on Aging (COA) initiated

changes to its senior nutrition program and how it financially supports our

great Hamilton Senior and Community Center. Change is often difficult to

accept and understand and can result in confusion and questions. In

general, the changes benefit our Center and our lunch guests, particularly

those with limited financial means.

I, as well as all of you who hopefully enjoyed lunches with us during the

month of May, received a letter (not a bill) from the COA indicating the

number of meals you enjoyed during May. There have been a number of

questions raised about the “The current cost of our senior meals is $12.54

per meal”; and that “This cost includes wages, benefits, mileage, raw food,

supplies and preparation.”. Some folks have mis-understood this to mean

they are obligated to pay this amount for each meal the letter also indicates

were enjoyed during the month.

I spoke with Cathy Orr, Executive Director of the COA who is aware of the

confusion and intends to send a notice clarifying points in the letter you

received. Summarily, the message the letter intended to convey is that

while the COA welcomes financial donations to support the nutrition program, there is no

obligation to do so in any amount. A donation, if any,

is dependent upon your budget. The primary goal of the nutrition program

is to help to assure community seniors have access to good nutrition, as

well as having a place to enjoy the company of friends in “The Happiest

Place in Town”. Please see me if you have further questions or comments.

DO YOU HAVE MUSICAL TALENT?

We are fortunate to have a group of talented volunteers who provide

enjoyable tunes to complement our delicious lunches. Roxanne Reginato

who has been an organizer of the group, unfortunately sustained a hand

injury so is unable to perform. Like many of us, she also has plans for an

extended vacation. Thus, there are some days when we unfortunately will

not be serenaded unless we discover additional talent to help out. You

have heard a sample of my singing, so that clearly will not work! So if you

have undiscovered talent, see me or Jean Roberts.

BITTERROOT ROOM FOR RENT

If you, a family member, a friend or become aware of someone looking for a

venue for a gathering or event, our spacious Bitterroot Room, which can

accommodate over 100 persons for a variety of events such as family

reunions, birthday or anniversary celebrations, meetings, etc., is available

for rent on a one time or regular basis. Cost is very reasonable and

includes the use of tables, chairs, kitchen facilities and sound system. If

interested, see me or Connie Litvin for details.

WINNER OF FATHERS DAY HAT CONTEST

For those that were not present for the exciting Father’s Day Hat Contest

organized by Gene Butler, the winner was Ralph Keppel, who sported a lid

adorned with a bikini clad female anatomy. However, Ralph sneezed

causing a wardrobe malfunction to the embarrassment of the attendees.

For his embarrassing display, Ralph received a $25.00 Chamber community

gift card. Congratulations Ralph.

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

Besides birthdays, the most significant day in July is July 4th. If you travel,

be safe. If you stay home, don’t burn your steak or bratwurst, and do not

set off fireworks, as they scare my dog and other animals.
